The Largest Cathode Material Factory in the United States Officially Begins Operation
Latest updated: Dec 21, 2023
LG Chem has begun the construction of what will become the global production hub for battery materials—the cathode material factory in the United States. The plan is to locally produce cathode materials tailored for North American electric vehicles and collaborate with key customers throughout the development to the supply chain.
On December 19, the groundbreaking ceremony for LG Chem's cathode material factory took place in Tennessee, USA. The factory covers a total area of approximately 1.7 million square meters. In the first phase, LG Chem plans to invest about 2 trillion Korean won to establish a project with an annual production capacity of 60,000 tons of cathode materials. This annual output is expected to support the production of approximately 600,000 batteries for high-performance pure electric vehicles (with a range of 500 kilometers) each year. The factory is poised to become the largest cathode material facility in the United States. It is anticipated that the facility will commence full-scale production of NCMA (Nickel-Cobalt-Manganese-Aluminum) cathode materials in 2026.
